Archer Leadership Development Program - finding and fostering the next generation of PNG leaders.

Since 2011, the Archer Leadership Development Program has supported the next generation of Papua New Guinean leaders - young people ready to stand tall and lead change. Each year, a group of exceptional final-year tertiary students are selected for a 12-month leadership journey grounded in Harvard’s Adaptive Leadership model.

From hundreds of applicants, the program identifies students at a pivotal moment - transitioning from education into the workforce - and surrounds them with the tools, networks, and support to grow into leaders PNG needs. They are chosen not just for academic excellence, but for their commitment to community, equity, and a better PNG.

Throughout the year, Archer Leaders take part in intensive leadership workshops, receive one-on-one mentoring from leaders in their chosen fields, and deliver real-world community development projects. They gain work experience, take part in an exchange program to Australia, and are supported with tuition, boarding, and a professional development allowance.

The result? Young Leaders who are confident, connected, and committed to driving positive change in PNG. The impact stretches far beyond the individual - it’s about equipping a generation of leaders who will shape the nation’s future with integrity, courage, and commitment.

With an extraordinary alumni of 100+ Archers, the future certainly looks bright.

Darrel Yockopua, Archer Leader 2024, PNG University of Technology - B(Hons) Mineral Processing Engineering

“The Archer Leadership program taught me new ways of thinking and to explore ideas that seemed unconventional to me. In many of the interactive sessions we've had, I've really been pushed out of my comfort zone and explored new ways of thinking and behaving. I have become more self-aware and I am now clear-minded of the people around me, and more understanding of their actions and my actions as well. All in all, I've gained a lot of confidence, and my self-esteem has improved, but also, to have the patience to sit back and observe things 'from the balcony' to be more enlightened before making a decision on what to say or what to do.”
