E-learning & teacher in-service - Empowering Teachers, improving Student outcomes in Western Province.

Since 2020, KTF and SDP have been working together to improve education in Western Province through an innovative E-Learning and Teacher In-service project. What began in Balimo has now expanded to Morehead and Lake Murray, reaching some of the most remote parts of the province.

This work is a team effort, with support from the Western Provincial Department of Education and Western Sydney University, who help tailor learning materials to local needs and benchmark impact. The project focuses on three key areas: ongoing teacher training, regular in-class coaching, and equipping schools with the right tools - including PNG-tailored Bilum Books, curriculum materials, digital teaching resources and solar power - to improve teaching and learning.

In Lake Murray, we're trialling Qhatapa - a unique program that encourages and rewards communities for supporting local school improvements and engaging with education. To overcome the critical shortage of teachers, and long-term school closures, we’re also training community members as teacher assistants, enrolling them in FODE and giving them the skills to help in classrooms right away.

It’s a practical approach, focused on strengthening schools and supporting teachers where it’s needed most, improving access to high quality teaching and learning in remote Western Province.

“Qhatapa”

Means celebration in the local language of the Lake Murray communities. The name was suggested and agreed by the local communities.

“I want real change. The community wants to help be part of the change. I believe that children in play, they learn. A child can be playing and you are teaching them life lessons.”
