Mini Grids Powering the future for KTF's Colleges & Health Facilities

PNG is among the most climate-vulnerable countries globally, grappling with rising temperatures, sea level rise, increased rainfall and flooding, ocean acidification, and more frequent extreme weather events such as cyclones and El Niño–Southern Oscillation variability. These changes have profound consequences for health, biodiversity, livelihoods, food security, and the broader economy, particularly in rural and coastal communities. Oro Province, where Kokoda College is located, exemplifies these challenges.

Oro Province is one of the most disaster-prone regions in PNG, experiencing a range of hazards including floods, droughts, strong winds and even volcanic activity. The province's geological and climatic diversity contributes to its vulnerability, with communities often located in areas prone to these natural disasters. These climate-induced challenges directly affect the productivity and functioning of KTF's projects, including Kokoda College. The increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events pose risks to infrastructure, disrupt educational activities, and exacerbate existing vulnerabilities within the community.

Solar mini-grids: the next phase

Sometimes, stand-alone solar units aren’t enough. At KTF’s Kokoda College, where over 200 FODE students rotate through each term, the demand for power - especially to charge tablets and study at night - quickly outstripped supply.

In 2024, we installed a solar mini-grid that now powers device charging, a new ICT lab, and lighting across classrooms, mess hall, dorms, bathrooms and the campus aid post.

Next, we’re bringing mini-grids to the Sanananda Aid Post to strengthen health services, and to the Mt Koiri FODE Centre high on the Kokoda Track - supporting students and improving communication in this remote location.

With the help of the mini-grid, you can see that it has already benefited the students, and it is minimising ozone layer contribution. But with the installation of solar, all these things, it has been very helpful to the environment itself and the students. This is the first of its kind in [Kokoda], which everybody is so impressed about, and they are dreaming of having such a project. Being a health worker and walking into [villages], going on patrols and all this, and listening to people's comments about this mini-grid, it was a great privilege for Kokoda College itself to have such.

People around Oro province are talking about this grid.’
