Eye See PNG: Bringing Vision and Opportunity to Communities
KTF’s Eye See PNG initiative continues to change lives, delivering vital eye health services to communities in Papua New Guinea.
Recently, KTF health workers Maggie, Jesica, and Thomas completed a week-long patrol to primary schools in Kokoda, Kebara, Gorari, Ilamo, and Ajeka. With the support of partners OOXII, the team conducted vision screenings for more than 270 students, using innovative tools to identify those in need of corrective support. The initiative quickly gained momentum, with a local hire company also inviting the team to test 62 members of their extended community.
In total, 95 pairs of corrective glasses were distributed free of charge to children and community members experiencing impaired vision - providing what is, for many, a life-changing opportunity.
One of the beneficiaries, Akisa, had struggled with poor eyesight since childhood. The condition forced her to leave school early and later prevented her from continuing her studies through FODE after just two months. With her vision now corrected through the program, Akisa is determined to resume her education and pursue her ambitions.
Eye health is often overlooked in broader health initiatives, despite estimates that 75% of blindness and visual impairment in Papua New Guinea is either preventable or treatable. By addressing this gap, the Eye See PNG program not only restores sight but also creates pathways to education, employment, and improved quality of life.
