Breaking Barriers Through Sport: Token’s Kicks 4 Kokoda Story

How can sport create inclusion, confidence and change? Through Kicks 4 Kokoda (K4K), we’re seeing how the power of play is helping break down barriers and open doors for young people.

Meet Token.

A passionate soccer and football fan, Token loves the game - but a lack of understanding and support sometimes made it difficult for him to participate. Through K4K’s strong commitment to inclusion, ensuring sport is accessible and welcoming for everyone, that has changed.

Since joining the program, Token has played alongside his friends and teammates, taking part in fun, skills-based games while also learning about health-seeking behaviours, gender equality and available health services. One message in particular has stayed with him: “No means no.” Token now proudly carries this lesson, reinforcing the importance of respect and consent within his community.

At the upcoming K4K tournament, Token will step into a leadership role, wearing the referee’s cap and supporting the games as a timekeeper and scorekeeper.

Beyond the field, Token dreams big. He is an aspiring singer and guitarist, using music to express himself and connect with others. We’re proud to stand alongside Token as he becomes a champion for health, inclusion and respect - on and off the pitch.

Kicks 4 Kokoda is supported by the Australian Government through Team Up and delivered in partnership with PNG Olympic Committee.
