Project Zero - has one goal - protect the most vulnerable in our communities, especially women & girls.
We envision that all people will feel safe from violence in their homes and communities. From our youngest pikininis, to our parents and grandparents.
Project Zero utilises prevention and response strategies to address:
-
Gender-based Violence (GBV)
-
Family and Sexual Violence (FSV)
-
Child abuse
-
Disability, equity and social inclusion
KTF became aware of rising rates of gender-based and family violence through its network of community health workers and teachers in Oro Province. The need for a targeted, community-led response was urgent. Launched at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic - a heightened time of danger for women and children - Project Zero was designed to promote a zero-tolerance approach to violence against women, children, and people with disabilities.
In partnership with local agencies including the Department of Community Development, FSVU, and Femili PNG, Project Zero focuses on prevention, response, and system strengthening for effective response when incidents occur.
Through community-led awareness and stronger referral pathways, we’re working to ensure survivors are supported, not silenced.
In 2023, KTF built a dedicated Safe Haus in Oro Province - a place of refuge for survivors and a hub for coordinated services. Survivors receive access to healthcare, justice, policing support, legal services, and repatriation help to safely return to their home communities.
Project Zero is actively building the capacity of frontline services to better respond and support. Because lasting change will only happen when survivors are believed, supported, and empowered.
If current trends continue, nearly 8 million women in PNG could experience violence by 2046. Project Zero is about changing that story - one survivor, one community at a time.
Lukautim Wantok is upskilling for new lives
At KTF’s Safe Haus, Lukautim Wantok - look out for a friend - supports survivors of gender-based violence to rebuild their lives with dignity, skills, and financial independence.
It offers practical livelihood training and resource packs tailored to upskill survivors in sewing, gardening, or bilum weaving - skills that can generate income and restore agency. Bilum Kits include personal care items, essential contacts, and tools to support this new beginning. Baby Bundle Kits support survivors caring for infants.
Financial insecurity is one of the greatest barriers to leaving violence. Lukautim Wantok helps remove that barrier - equipping women with confidence, capability, and a take-home kit to start afresh, on their own terms.
